Are there benefits of smoking? Can you find lots of cigarettes on the streets in Rwanda? And what do children actually learn in school about smoking in Germany and what in Rwanda? Questions such as these have mutually been asked as the core of a further project which Root Foundation has implemented in cooperation with a team of students led by teacher Ursula Wussow from German high school Gymnasium Netphen.

The German partner students who are attending 6th grade had already been given an introduction in class regarding the consequences of smoking when some of our children and youths also became involved in their examination of this topic. Our team member Ella was in charge of working with them both on answering questions they had been asked by the German students and on questions from the Rwandan perspective about the situation of smoking in Germany. The outcome of our exchange work has now been handed in as a contribution to the German students’ competition “Be smart – Don’t start”. We are grateful to the team from Gymnasium Netphen for the involvement in this project and are now looking forward to hear back from the jury soon!
