Root Foundation has the honour to partner with numerous reliable and generous organisations, associations, institutions and committees. Through their support, we have been able to offer our children a wide range of activities, events and education.
We are very grateful to:
Eine Welt Netz NRW e.V & Volunta gGmbH
German Volunteer Sending Organisations
Every year, between two and four German volunteers selected by “Eine Welt Netz NRW e.V.” and “Volunta gGmbH” support Root Foundation’s work in Kigali. The volunteers support the expansion, sustainability, and development of new concepts at Root Foundation. They are looked after and their work is monitored by these organisations. This partnership is enriching for our organisation, our beneficiaries and the volunteers themselves.
Root Foundation Germany e.V.
Fundraising, Critical Reflection of South-North Cooperation
Root Foundation Germany e.V. was founded in 2018 by a group of committed former German volunteers of Root Foundation Rwanda. The German association raises funds for Root Foundation Rwanda and presents our activities to their European network. At the same time, this partnership builds on critical reflection of the stereotypes that might be fuelled by the cooperation and aims to rethink power structures between the Global South and the Global North.
Rwanda working group at “Gymnasium Netphen”
Intercultural exchange and projects
Partner students from German school ‘Realschule am Kreuzberg’ (RAK) supported us through a ‘Rwanda working group’ by initiating various yearly actions. They started in 2015 with a video and photography project. Since then, the partnership has blossomed with Ursula Wussow on the German side leading the cooperation, which has won several German school competitions. The school closed in 2017, but Ursula and the ‘Rwanda working group’ continue to support us at Gymnasium Netphen. We are grateful for their commitment to our continuous cooperation.
Jumelage Rwanda
Coordination Office of the Partnership Rhineland-Palatinate – Rwanda
The Jumelage has supported micro-projects and events at Root Foundation such as our Football Tournament and My Talent Show. The partner office continuously seeks opportunities to support our work. They are our link to german schools and coordinate two German volunteers to come to Root Foundation each year. This partnership provides ongoing support for our programmes.
Goethe-Institut Kigali
Cultural Projects
The German cultural institute used to host our monthly Fellowship Discussions. They provided the space, technical equipment and drinks. In 2016, they hosted our “My Talent Workshops” including an art exhibition, poem publications, and talks. Through their support of these cultural activities, Root Foundation continues to offer enriching cultural programmes in Kigali. Both in 2018 and 2019, the Goethe-Institut decisively sponsored the preparations of the respective editions of our annual “My Talent Show”.
Africa International Club Rwanda
Small Grant Sponsorships
At the end of each year, we take our children on a field trip. Three years in a row, this trip was sponsored by AIC to review the year and everyone’s personal progress. We are grateful to AIC as they provided the needed support for the trips.
Green Hills Academy
Students Exchange
Students from Green Hills Academy used to visit the children at Root Foundation to play and solve tasks together. Such exchange helps all children involved broaden each other’s perspectives. In 2017, Green Hills Academy hosted a football tournament where Root Foundation and other local partner institutions participated at their grounds.
National Institutes of Museums of Rwanda
Yearly Visits of National Museums
Together with Robert Masozera, the Director of the Institute, we established a partnership of visiting a different museum each year. Our first visit was in January 2017 which was very successful. The trip to the Ethnographic Museum in Huye included a guided tour and free entrance to the museum giving our children the opportunity to understand their heritage.
Kigali Public Library
Book Donations
Many of our books have been provided by Kigali Public Library which we appreciate very much.
German Embassy Kigali
We received financial support from the German embassy allowing German artist Marie Köhler to conduct the photography workshop “Mach dir ein Bild” (Make a picture) in 2013/2014. We have kindly been given opportunities to seek international partnerships through the support of the German embassy in Rwanda. We appreciate their book donations and their support through the Goethe Institute, Kigali.
Christ’s Church Rwanda
Brett Shreck, the Senior Pastor of Christ’s Church Rwanda (CCR), is a role model for rising present and future Rwandan leaders. He is a key adviser at Root Foundation and has secured several individual sponsorships for our children. CCR has also trained our team through their annual Global Leadership Summit.
In December 2016, Root Foundation collaborated with the National Olympic and Sports Committee to organise a Children’s Sports Day. We brought 1000 vulnerable children from different NGOs together to celebrate sport making it our biggest project so far. (See below)
We are very thankful for our long list of partners and sponsors who help make everything we do possible. Their contributions reduce the number of street children in Kigali and increase the quality of their life. We look forward to continuing working with them!
